Geotech Soil Vapor Extraction Systems   SVE

Regenerative Blower SVE mounted inside optional hazmat enclosure

What is Soil Vapor Extraction?

Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) Systems extract contaminants from the subsurface soil in a vapor form. Therefore, SVE systems are designed to remove contaminants that have a tendency to volatilize or evaporate easily such as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and some semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC’s) beneath the ground surface in the unsaturated zone IE: Vadose Zone. By applying a vacuum through a series of underground wells, contaminants are pulled to the surface as vapor or gas.

Soil Vapor Extraction Applicability

The target contaminants group for in situ SVE are VOC’s and some fuels. The technology is typically applicable only to volatile compounds with a Henry’s law constant greater than 0.01 or a vapor pressure greater than 0.5 mm Hg (0.02 inches Hg). Other factors, such as moisture content, organic content, and air permeability of the soil, will affect the SVE’s effectiveness. In situ SVE will not remove heavy oils, metals, PCB’s, or dioxins.

Because the process involves a continuous flow of air through the soil, it often promotes the in-situ biodegradation of low-volatility organic compounds that may be present.

Soil Vapor Extraction Blower Options

Several blower options are available depending on flow and vacuum requirements.

  • Centrifugal Fans
  • Regenerative
  • Rotary Lobe (Positive Displacement)
  • Rotary Vane
  • Rotary Claw
  • Liquid Ring (Dual Phase, Multi-Phase Extraction or MPE)

Configurations Available

Every Geotech SVE system is factory assembled and fully tested for function, performance, and safety to meet the design conditions of each site application.

  • Compact skid mounted designs
  • Trailer-mounted and hazmat enclosures
  • Complete systems including knockout drums, effluent pumps, temperature and vacuum switches, controls

New FAA Rules

Federal Aviation Administration

Summer of 2016, the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) released Title 14 CFR Part 107 rules that apply towards commercial use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). This rule includes the option to apply for a certificate of waiver or authorization (COA) which allows sUAS operators to deviate from Part 107 rules if the FAA finds that the proposed operation is performed safely. Federal, State, and Local government agencies have the option to either operate under Part 107 rule or can apply for a public COA.

Waivable sections of Part 107:

  • Operations from a moving vehicle or aircraft (§ 107.25)
  • Day Operations (§ 107.29)
  • Beyond Visual Line of Sight (§ 107.31)
  • Visual Observer (§ 107.33)
  • Operating Multiple sUAS (§ 107.35)
  • Yielding the right of Way (§ 107.37 (a))
  • Operations over People (§ 107.39)
  • Operations in Certain Airspace (§ 107.41)
