December 2020

Weathering the Storm

As the days grow shorter and colder temperatures settle-in, be mindful of equipment that can be damaged when exposed to freezing temperatures during use, storage, and transit.

YSI Professional Plus

Water Quality Instrumentation may include pH and ORP electrodes that can freeze if not stored at proper temperatures. If you plan to purchase or rent a pH or ORP electrode, Geotech suggests the following:

  • Request overnight shipment to minimize time-period exposure
  • Pack sensors with one or two hand warmers when shipping
  • Store sensors in temperatures above 32°F (0°C) by placing instrumentation inside the vehicle cab during transit or indoors when not in use

It's recommended to perform a visual inspection of electrodes if you suspect they have been exposed to cold temperatures. Symptoms of frozen electrodes include:

  • Shattered or cracked glass bulb
  • Reference junction protrusion
  • Cracked sensor body

Photoionization Detectors

SS Geosub on Sled

Electric Submersible and Bladder Pumps can contain residual groundwater after sampling. The expansion of water freezing inside pump housings can permanently damage rotors and motors, split bladders, and housings – resulting in project delays and costly repairs. Geotech recommends that you:

  • Disassemble and dry pumps at the end of each sampling day
  • Disassemble and drain residual water prior to shipping
  • Store pumps indoors when not in use or inside the vehicle during transit

Photoionization Detectors (PID) lamps can fog or condensate when taken from a warm environment to a cool outdoor project site. The result of condensation from rapid temperature changes can cause erroneous or unreliable VOC readings. Keeping the PID at a consistent temperature may keep your project moving along. Geotech recommends to:

  • Allow the PID instrument to equilibrate to ambient air temperature prior to powering On
  • Calibrate PIDs at least daily, then bump test the instrument periodically
  • If calibration fails, clean the sensor and lamp to remedy instrument sensitivity

If you suspect your equipment requires maintenance or repair, contact a Geotech representative at 800-833-7958 to schedule an equipment evaluation for service.

YSI 556 MPS
END-OF-LIFE NOTICEYSI 556 MPS

The famous YSI 556 multiparameter water quality instrument enhanced how the industry monitored ground and surface water for more than a decade. The end-of-life announcement came by surprise to many, but new and improved models maintain the dependability you've come to trust from the YSI brand.

Trade-In & Trade-Up

Until December 31st, 2020 – Geotech will responsibly recycle YSI 556 instruments traded-in and apply a credit when you trade-up to a newer YSI model. No matter the condition, turn it into something good for you and good for the planet.

Qualified trade-up instrumentation:

YSI ProDSS
YSI ProDSSThe ProDSS is a rugged multiparameter instrument that offers a broad range of digital sensor configurations, rugged mil-spec connectors, and ergonomic handheld display.

YSI ProQuatro
YSI ProQuatroThe ProQuatro is an economical single or multiparameter water quality instrument that is configurable for common water quality monitoring projects.

YSI ProSwap
YSI ProSwapThe ProSwap is highly configurable by enabling users to easily swap one digital sensor for another. ProSwap can transform into whatever you need- ranging from purpose-built turbidity, optical DO, or profiling pH.

Can't trade it in? Recycle it.
As an environmentally responsible organization, Geotech will recycle your unwanted instrumentation at no-charge. Contact a Geotech Representative for additional information.

Drone Flight Training Course
Hands-On & In-Person

Outdoor Flight Training

"I enrolled in the course in preparation for the Part 107 exam. Initially, I thought the value of this training was solely the exam prep. After taking the course, the value is the knowledge, hands on training, and confidence to operate a UAS in the field. Leptron closes the gap between faking your way through or knowing what you are doing and why."
-Nathan W.

Geotech developed a drone flight training program that has helped industry professionals introduce drone technology into their work flow. Whether you are interested in generating impressive marketing material or rendering high-resolution photogrammetry, Geotech's flight training course is right for your business.

Geotech traditionally attends dozens of national and international conferences and trade shows each year with
intentions to learn, collaborate, and educate the industries we serve. COVID-19 has vastly impacted this years' events forcing organizers to cancel or host through virtual forums. Geotech recently received notice that the
last two events remaining this calendar year have been canceled too. These announcements come with relief as everyone's health and safety is the highest priority.

With 2021 around the corner – we hope that many of our annual traditions will resume next year and make up for missed opportunities to personally connect with our industry partners and friends.
